HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO FILM IN THAILAND?There is no meaningful “Thailand day rate” for an entire production. A two-camera reality show, a six-day micro drama, a beauty commercial and an international feature all use the same country very differently.
The biggest cost drivers are usually:
- crew size and shooting days
- cast and international travel
- camera, lighting and grip package
- number of locations and company moves
- location fees and permit requirements
- art department and set construction
- vehicles, boats, drones or specialist equipment
- accommodation and transport
- foreign HODs and travelling crew
Send us the schedule early. We can usually see very quickly where Thailand will save you money — and where it won’t.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU SAVE BY FILMING IN THAILAND?
For many international productions, the saving comes from the combination of
lower local crew costs, competitive equipment rental, locations, transport, accommodation and production overhead. For high-volume formats such as
micro dramas and vertical series, our Thailand production model can come in around
40–50% below comparable US production costs, depending on cast, schedule and creative requirements.
For larger films and series, the percentage varies much more. We would rather show you the actual comparison than promise a magic number before seeing the script.
WHERE THAILAND SAVES MONEY
Local Film CrewThailand has experienced camera, lighting, grip, art, production, costume, hair and makeup, sound and AD departments that regularly work with international productions. That means you can often fly in only the key creative personnel you need and
hire most of the film crew locally in Thailand. Every person you do not fly from Los Angeles or Europe also removes an airfare, hotel room, per diem, visa, work permit and local transport line from the budget. Those numbers add up quickly.
Camera, Lighting & Grip EquipmentBangkok has strong rental infrastructure for
camera, lenses, lighting, grip, sound and production equipment. Send us your equipment wish list before you book freight. We’ll tell you what is available locally, what the closest alternative is and what really needs to travel. Flying equipment halfway around the world because nobody checked Bangkok inventory first is not a production strategy.
LocationsThailand gives you a lot of production value per company move. Bangkok alone can cover
luxury villas, penthouses, offices, hospitals, hotels, clubs, restaurants, streets, markets, warehouses and modern international city environments. Outside Bangkok you have islands, beaches, mountains, jungle, resorts and rural landscapes. Fewer moves usually mean more shooting time. And more shooting time is often the cheapest production saving you can find.
WHERE WE DON’T RECOMMEND SAVING
Not every lower price is a saving. A cheaper crew that works slowly, the wrong camera package, a location without proper access or an under-resourced art department can cost far more once the production starts losing hours. We look at the budget as producers. If the cheaper option creates a risk of overtime, reshoots or compromised footage, we’ll tell you. There are plenty of places to save money in Thailand. The frame does not need to be one of them.
CREW COSTS IN THAILAND
Thai crew rates depend on department, seniority, production type, shoot length and the level of international experience required. A commercial may use a different rate structure from a feature. A long-running reality production may negotiate differently from a three-day shoot. For budgeting, we build the crew around the production rather than starting with the biggest possible team.
Tell us:
- who is travelling
- which HODs you want locally
- number of shooting days
- camera count
- production format
We’ll build the crew structure and rate it properly.
EQUIPMENT COSTS IN THAILAND
Camera and lighting costs depend heavily on the package. A standard international commercial or scripted package can usually be sourced locally. Specialist lenses, motion-control systems, unusual rigs or highly specific camera configurations may need more planning. We can quote
camera rental, lenses, lighting, grip, sound, generators, drones and specialist equipment in Thailandas part of one production budget. You do not need to coordinate five rental houses from another time zone.
CASTING COSTS IN BANGKOK
Bangkok has
Thai, Asian, Western and international English-speaking talent, which gives international productions more casting flexibility than many producers expect. For some projects, local casting removes a surprisingly large travel line from the budget.
We can price:
- Thai talent
- pan-Asian casts
- Western and international actors based in Thailand
- extras and featured background
- specialist performers
If the role needs someone flown in, we budget that too.
LOCATION COSTS IN THAILAND
Location fees range enormously. A Bangkok office, private villa, luxury hotel, tropical beach and protected heritage site are not going to live on the same spreadsheet line. The price also changes with:
- shooting hours
- crew size
- prep and strike days
- art department requirements
- exclusivity
- parking and unit base
- night shooting
- damage deposits and restoration
We scout with the budget in mind, not after everyone has already fallen in love with the most expensive option.
FILM PERMITS, VISAS & FOREIGN CREW
International productions also need to budget for the legal side of filming in Thailand. Depending on the project and travelling team, that can include
Thailand film permits, local coordination, visas, work authorisation and specialist permissions for drones or restricted locations. We handle these as part of the production rather than leaving your production manager to discover Thai bureaucracy through Google.
BANGKOK OR THE ISLANDS?
Bangkok is usually the most efficient production base because the crew, rental houses, casting pool, suppliers and production infrastructure are concentrated here. The moment the shoot moves to an island or remote province, you may add:
- crew travel
- hotels
- equipment transport
- trucks or ferries
- per diems
- additional prep days
That does not mean you shouldn’t shoot there. It means the location needs to earn its place in the film. We can compare
Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Chiang Mai and other Thailand filming locations before you lock the route.
WANT THE CHEAPEST VERSION? GIVE US THE SCRIPT EARLY.
The biggest savings usually happen before the schedule is locked. Move two scenes into the same location. Cast three roles locally. Replace one expensive company move. Source the camera package in Bangkok. Shoot the beach on the coast with the right weather that month. None of those changes necessarily affect the audience. They can affect the budget a lot.
HOW FAST CAN WE BUILD A THAILAND PRODUCTION BUDGET?
Send us:
- script or treatment
- shooting schedule, if you have one
- number of shoot days
- travelling crew
- cast requirements
- equipment wish list
- location references
- target budget, if there is one
You’ll hear from us within
one working day, Bangkok time. A first production estimate normally takes
two to three working days, depending on how much of the schedule is already fixed.
HAVE A US OR EUROPEAN BUDGET ALREADY?
Even better. Send it to us. We can build the
Thailand production budget against it and show you what we would source locally, what should travel, where the meaningful savings are and where we would leave the money alone.
